Production starts with the cultivation of the Cannabis plant.

Without the Cannabis plant it is not possible to make CBD. The plants that Organica uses for its products are grown on a large scale with great care in accordance with WHO GACP regulations.

Just like any plant, it starts as a seed that takes root and grows into an adult plant. At the right time, the plant is ready for harvest and we start the biomass extraction process.

There are various extraction methods, the 3 most commonly used extraction methods are:

• Alcohol extraction
• Oil extraction
• CO2 extraction

Alcohol extraction

Benefits: Alcohol extraction is a simple and cheap solution to extract CBD from the plant. The hemp buds are soaked in alcohol for a certain period, causing the CBD to dissolve in the alcohol. By then evaporating the alcohol, CBD paste remains.

Disadvantages: The entire process is slow and a lot of active ingredients are lost during the process.

Oil extraction

This process uses heating and usually only the tops of the plant are used (this is because the tops contain more CBD compared to the rest of the plant). Due to the heating process, other ingredients are lost and pure CBD remains.

The majority of users experience the taste of it as pleasant.

Disadvantage: The costs. Oil extraction is more expensive than CO2 extraction.

CO2 extraction

CO2 extraction is currently the most used method. It is an extremely efficient way because, with this form of extraction, we remove all cannabinoids (including CBD) from the plant. In the Co2 extraction process, ‘supercritical’ carbon dioxide (a gas) is used. The air pressure of the gas is increased so high that it behaves like a liquid. This liquid CO2 is then used to extract the CBD from the hemp plant.

One of the biggest advantages of CO2 extraction is that there is no heating. This means that heat-sensitive substances are preserved. However, it is a costly method to extract CBD.
